<p align="center">
  Auralis Bot is a lightweight Discord bot built with Python and <code>discord.py</code>.
  It includes general utility commands, a news command powered by the NewsData API, and a small admin toolkit for server operators.
</p>

## Overview

Auralis Bot is organized as a small, modular Discord bot:

- `main.py` starts the bot and loads every cog in `cogs/`.
- `cogs/general.py` provides utility and informational commands.
- `cogs/news.py` fetches current news from NewsData.io.
- `cogs/admin.py` contains administrator-only controls.
- `utils/fetch_rss.py` is a reusable helper for parsing RSS feeds.

The codebase is intentionally simple and easy to extend, making it a good base for a general-purpose community bot, a news bot, or a custom Discord assistant.

## Features

### General Utilities

- Greet users with a friendly hello command.
- Check bot latency with `ping`.
- Display user avatars.
- Show server and user information in embeds.
- Provide an auto-generated help command.

### News Delivery

- Fetch news by keyword.
- Fetch news by category shortcuts such as `tech`, `ai`, `crypto`, and `cybersecurity`.
- Return a random trending topic when no keyword is supplied.
- Display article titles, descriptions, links, and images in Discord embeds.

### Administration

- Administrator-only shutdown command.

### Extensibility

- Cog-based architecture for easy feature separation.
- RSS helper utility ready for future news or feed commands.
- Simple config-driven prefix and API key setup.

## Commands

The actual prefix is defined in `config.py`.

| `hello` | Sends a friendly greeting to the user. |
| `ping` | Shows the bot latency in milliseconds. |
| `about` | Displays bot information in an embed. |
| `help` | Lists the available commands. |
| `avatar [member]` | Shows the avatar for yourself or another member. |
| `serverinfo` | Shows basic server information. |
| `userinfo [member]` | Shows account and join information for a member. |
| `news [keyword]` | Fetches news for a topic or category. |
| `shutdown` | Shuts the bot down. Administrator only. |

## Setup

### Prerequisites

- Python 3.10 or newer
- A Discord bot application and token
- A NewsData.io API key

### 1. Install Dependencies

```bash
pip install -r requirements.txt
```

### 2. Create `config.py`

Create a `config.py` file in the project root with your bot settings.

COMMAND_PREFIX = "!"
NEWSDATA_API_KEY = "your_newsdata_api_key"
```

### 3. Run the Bot

```bash
python main.py
```

When the bot starts successfully, it will load every `.py` file inside `cogs/` and print a ready message in the terminal.

## Configuration

The bot reads all runtime settings from `config.py`.

| Setting | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| `DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN` | Authenticates the bot with Discord. |
| `COMMAND_PREFIX` | Sets the prefix used for commands. |
| `NEWSDATA_API_KEY` | Enables the news command to fetch articles. |

If you want to keep secrets out of version control, store `config.py` locally and avoid committing it.

## Usage

### General Commands

- `hello` for a quick greeting.
- `ping` to check responsiveness.
- `about` for a short bot summary.
- `serverinfo` and `userinfo` for server/member metadata.
- `avatar` to retrieve a profile picture URL.

### News Commands

- `news` returns random trending news.
- `news <keyword>` searches for a specific topic.
- `news category <name>` uses a built-in category shortcut.

### Admin Commands

- `shutdown` stops the bot gracefully.
