# HEART Sync

A mental wellness chat companion powered by AI. Talk to it like a journal — it listens, detects your emotions, and responds with empathy. Built with React, Node.js, Supabase, and Groq.

## Features

- **Google OAuth** — sign in with one click via Supabase Auth
- **Empathetic AI** — responses follow Acknowledge → Validate → Explore structure
- **Emotion detection** — detects primary emotion, intensity, and secondary emotion per message
- **Conversation memory** — last 8 messages passed as context so the AI remembers what was said
- **Conversation sidebar** — past chats with auto-generated titles, new chat button
- **Voice input** — mic button using Web Speech API (Chrome)
- **Crisis detection** — local regex + AI risk scoring, immediate helpline referral
- **Content moderation** — blocks harmful content locally before hitting the AI

## Prerequisites

- [Node.js](https://nodejs.org) v18+
- A [Supabase](https://supabase.com) project (free tier works)
- A [Groq](https://console.groq.com) API key (free)
- Google OAuth credentials (for Google login)

## Setup

### 1. Clone and install

cd heartsync
npm install
```

### 2. Supabase — create tables

Go to your Supabase project → **SQL Editor** and run:

### 3. Supabase — enable Google OAuth

1. Go to **Authentication → Providers → Google** → toggle ON
2. Add your Google OAuth **Client ID** and **Client Secret**
3. Copy the **Callback URL** shown (e.g. `https://your-project.supabase.co/auth/v1/callback`)
4. In [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com) → Credentials → OAuth 2.0 Client → add the callback URL as an authorized redirect URI

### 4. Backend environment

```bash
cp backend/.env.example backend/.env
```

Fill in `backend/.env`:

SUPABASE_URL=https://your-project-id.supabase.co

SUPABASE_SERVICE_KEY=your_supabase_service_role_key
GROQ_API_KEY=gsk_your_groq_api_key
PORT=4000
```

Get these from:
- **Supabase** → Settings → API
- **Groq** → [console.groq.com](https://console.groq.com) → API Keys

### 5. Frontend — Supabase client

Open `frontend/src/supabaseClient.js` and replace with your project values:

### 6. Run

```bash
npm run dev
```

Opens:
- Frontend → http://localhost:3000
- Backend → http://localhost:4000

## API Endpoints

All protected endpoints require `Authorization: Bearer <supabase_access_token>`.

## AI Pipeline

Each message goes through this pipeline:

  → 1. Crisis regex check (local, instant)
  → 2. Harmful content check (local, instant)
  → 3. Fetch last 8 messages for context
  → 4. Single Groq call → emotion + intensity + risk_level + reply
  → 5. If risk_level high → append crisis helpline
  → 6. Save to Supabase + return to frontend
```

## Voice Input

The mic button uses the browser's built-in **Web Speech API** — no external service needed. Supported on Chrome and Edge. Automatically stops after ~2-3 seconds of silence.
