## Usage

> **Star required:** Cards only generate if the GitHub username you request has starred [`christianalberto/github-insights`](https://github.com/christianalberto/github-insights). After starring, embeds and the studio unlock for that user.

## Insight Cards

### Card types

| `card` | Description |

## Profile 3D Contribution

Based on [github-profile-3d-contrib](https://github.com/yoshi389111/github-profile-3d-contrib) by **SATO Yoshiyuki**.  
This endpoint generates a **3D contribution calendar** plus radar chart and language pie — the same visual styles as the original Action, served live as SVG from our API (no workflow commit required).

### Overview

Use it two ways:

1. **Live embed** — point an `<img>` at `/api/contrib-3d` (updates when GitHub data changes; subject to caching).
2. **Studio UI** — open the site, choose **3D Contribution**, pick a style, then **Generate** / download SVG·PNG·JPG.

> [!NOTE]
> To include private contributions on the calendar, enable **Include private contributions on my profile** in GitHub → **Settings** → **Public profile** → **Contributions & Activity**.  
> Self-hosted instances also need a classic PAT with `repo` + `read:user` (see [Self-Hosting](#self-hosting)).

## Self-Hosting

### Prerequisites

- Node.js 20+
- GitHub Personal Access Token

### Setup

1. **Clone the repository**
   ```bash
   git clone https://github.com/christianalberto/github-insights.git
   cd github-insights
   ```

2. **Install dependencies**
   ```bash
   npm install
   ```

3. **Create environment file**
   ```bash
   cp .env.example .env.local
   ```

4. **Add your GitHub token (classic PAT)**

Create a **Classic** [Personal Access Token](https://github.com/settings/tokens)  
   (`Settings → Developer settings → Personal access tokens → Tokens (classic)` → **Generate new token (classic)**).

Enable these scopes:

| Scope | Required for |
   |-------|----------------|
   | `repo` | Full access to private repositories (stars, languages, repo counts, etc.) |
   | `read:user` | Read user profile data |

Without `repo`, private repositories are ignored and only public data is returned.

Optional but recommended for private contribution activity on calendars/streaks: in GitHub go to  
   **Settings → Public profile → Contributions & Activity** and enable  
   **Include private contributions on my profile**.

Add the token to `.env.local`:
   ```
   GITHUB_TOKEN=your_token_here
   ```

Optional star-gate settings (enabled by default):
   ```
   REQUIRE_REPO_STAR=true
   STAR_REPO_OWNER=christianalberto
   STAR_REPO_NAME=github-insights
   ```
   Set `REQUIRE_REPO_STAR=false` locally if you want to skip the star check while developing.
5. **Run the development server**
   ```bash
   npm run dev
   ```

6. **Open [http://localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000)**
