# PDF Literature Renamer

Batch rename academic PDFs into a clean, consistent convention using metadata from CrossRef.

**Convention:** `Journal - Year - Author - Short description.pdf` (customizable)

Instead of dealing with filenames like `1-s2.0-S0925400511006186-main.pdf`, get `Sens Actuators B - 2011 - Castro - Novel e-nose discrimination of volatile organic biomarkers.pdf`.

## How it works

1. Extracts the DOI from each PDF (metadata fields, first-page text, or filename)
2. Queries the free CrossRef API for clean metadata (title, authors, year, journal)
3. If no DOI is found, tries ISBN extraction (first 5 pages) and queries Open Library / Google Books
4. Builds a standardized filename from a user-defined template
5. Falls back to first-page text parsing as last resort

Works for both journal articles (via DOI/CrossRef) and books/textbooks (via ISBN/Open Library).

## Requirements

- Python 3.10+
- `pymupdf` — PDF text extraction
- `requests` — CrossRef API calls

## Usage

### GUI (recommended)

Browse to your literature folder, pick a naming template (or write your own), hit **Dry Run** to preview proposed names, review and edit in the table, then **Live Fire** to execute.

**Template syntax** — use `{journal}`, `{year}`, `{author}`, `{title}`, `{publisher}` in any order with any separator:

Presets are available in a dropdown, or type your own.

- Double-click or right-click to edit proposed filenames
- **Open PDF** button to check the paper before renaming
- Edits saved to CSV for persistence between sessions
- Windows MAX_PATH handling for deep OneDrive/SharePoint folder structures

### Command line

Edit `PDF_DIR` in `rename_pdfs_v2.py` to point at your folder, then:

```

This runs in dry mode by default, writing `_rename_preview.csv` to the literature folder. Review the CSV (in Excel or the GUI), fix any bad entries in the "proposed" column, set `DRY_RUN = False`, and run again. The script reads from the CSV so your edits are preserved.

## Journal abbreviations

CrossRef's `short-container-title` field is used when available. For journals where it's missing or inconsistent, the `JOURNAL_OVERRIDES` dictionary in `rename_pdfs_v2.py` maps full names to abbreviations. Add entries as needed after reviewing dry run output.

## Limitations

- PDFs without a DOI or ISBN anywhere (some preprints, scanned documents, very old papers) fall back to heuristic text parsing, which is unreliable. These are flagged in the output for manual fixing.
- CrossRef metadata quality varies by publisher. Some journals return full names instead of abbreviations.
- Open Library coverage is good but not complete. Google Books is used as a secondary fallback for ISBN lookups.
- The text fallback parser struggles with publisher-specific header formats. Use the Fetch DOI/ISBN features in the GUI to fix these manually.
