## Overview

**Simple OSINT** is a modular, beginner-friendly command-line tool written in Python for collecting publicly available information.

It provides three investigation modes:

- Username discovery across supported public platforms
- Domain and DNS record enumeration
- IP address validation and public network information lookup

Every investigation automatically produces a timestamped JSON report that can be reviewed, archived or processed by another application.

> This project is intended for education, defensive security, research and authorized investigations only.

## Features

### Username Search

Checks whether a username appears to exist on supported platforms:

- GitHub
- GitLab
- Reddit

The report includes:

- Platform name
- Profile URL
- HTTP status code
- Whether the profile was detected

### Domain and DNS Lookup

Collects common DNS records for a supplied domain:

- `A` — IPv4 address records
- `AAAA` — IPv6 address records
- `MX` — Mail server records
- `NS` — Authoritative name servers
- `TXT` — Text and verification records
- `CNAME` — Canonical name records

### IP Address Lookup

Collects available information about an IPv4 or IPv6 address:

- IP version
- Private or public classification
- Global reachability status
- Reverse DNS hostname
- Country
- Region
- City
- Organization
- ASN information when available

Public location and organization information is requested from the [ipinfo.io](https://ipinfo.io/) service.

### JSON Reports

Each completed lookup is automatically saved in the `reports/` directory with a timestamped filename.

Example:

## Requirements

- Python 3.9 or newer
- `pip`
- An internet connection for public profile and IP intelligence requests

The core IP validation functions work locally, but external profile checks, DNS resolution and public IP information require network access.

## Installation

### 1. Clone the repository

```bash
git clone https://github.com/Ankit-ku-panda/Simple-Osint.git
cd Simple-Osint
```

### 2. Create a virtual environment

#### Windows PowerShell

```powershell
python -m venv .venv
.\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
```

If PowerShell blocks activation, run:

```powershell
Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope Process -ExecutionPolicy Bypass
.\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
```

#### Linux or macOS

```bash
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
```

### 3. Install the dependencies

```bash
pip install -r requirements.txt
```

## Usage

Start the application:

### Windows

```powershell
python main.py
```

### Linux or macOS

```bash
python3 main.py
```

The following menu will appear:

Enter the number corresponding to the lookup you want to perform.

## Usage Examples

### Username Search

Select option `1`, then enter a username:

### Domain Lookup

Select option `2`, then enter a domain without a URL path:

Do not include `https://`, `/login`, query parameters or fragments.

### IP Lookup

Select option `3`, then enter a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address:

## JSON Reports

A generated username report follows this general format:

Reports may contain information returned by external services. Verify important results independently before relying on them.

## Limitations

- Username detection is currently limited to GitHub, GitLab and Reddit.
- An HTTP `200` response does not always guarantee that a profile belongs to the intended person.
- Some websites may use redirects, bot protection or rate limiting.
- DNS results depend on the configured resolver and current DNS state.
- IP geolocation is approximate and does not reveal an exact physical address.
- External API availability and rate limits may affect results.
- Results can become outdated as public information changes.

## Responsible Use

Use Simple OSINT only for lawful purposes, including:

- Researching your own digital footprint
- Authorized security assessments
- Defensive cybersecurity
- Academic learning
- Verifying publicly available technical information

Do not use this project to harass, stalk, impersonate, threaten or invade another person's privacy. Do not attempt unauthorized access or use collected information for malicious activity.

You are responsible for complying with applicable laws, platform terms and organizational policies.
