A vehicle register for parking gates. A guard points a phone at a number plate
and the visit is recorded in under ten seconds. It works one-handed and with no
signal.

It is running at a gurudwara in Bengaluru with about 14,500 vehicles on the
register, most of which have been before.

Built with [**sherpa**](https://github.com/brij-coda/sherpa) — the harness this
was written under. If you only read one thing here, read the gates.

## The three gates

Sherpa's rule is that you do not know a check works until you have seen it fail.
So there is a script whose whole job is to plant the exact error each gate exists
to catch, and watch it fail:

Every one of those exists because a gate somewhere shipped green while checking
nothing. `tsc --noEmit` in a solution-style tsconfig compiles zero files and
exits 0. `deno check src/main.ts` only walks what main.ts imports. A scope gate
with an unanchored regex matched a renamed export and passed with a stale list.

## What is worth reading

- **[`PlateCandidates.kt`](android/app/src/main/java/com/merapeon/app/modules/parking/data/PlateCandidates.kt)**
  — picking which line of an OCR result is a number plate. The naive rule is
  "longest alphanumeric run", and it loses to a sticker: `PARKING2024` is eleven
  characters and beats a correct `KA01AB1234` every time. This scores on shape
  instead, joins two-line motorcycle plates, and repairs a letter `O` sitting
  where the format demands a digit.
- **[`SmartLookup.kt`](android/app/src/main/java/com/merapeon/app/modules/parking/capture/SmartLookup.kt)**
  — matching a fresh read against ~14,500 plates cached on the handset, entirely
  offline. It suggests and never substitutes: a wrong plate that looks right is
  worse than no plate, because nobody ever finds it.
- **[`OcrCorpusTest.kt`](android/app/src/test/java/com/merapeon/app/modules/parking/data/OcrCorpusTest.kt)**
  — replays 40 real gate photographs and holds a floor. Its expected values are
  what the guard actually saved, and a fifth of those are themselves misreads,
  so it says plainly that it is a regression detector and not a truth oracle.
- **[`erasure.ts`](backend/src/modules/parking/data/erasure.ts)** — per-owner
  encryption keys. Erasure destroys the key, so the name and number become
  unreadable everywhere at once rather than being deleted row by row.
- **The event log.** `session` and `vehicle` are projections, re-derived from an
  append-only `event` table. Corrections are new events, never edits.

## Running it

You will need a Postgres URL (Neon works), and Firebase phone auth if you want
real sign-in — `backend/.env.example` lists what goes where. There is a dev
sign-in door for local work so you do not need SMS to try it.

## What is not here

No production configuration, no keys, and no data. The register holds real
people's phone numbers against their vehicles, and none of that is in this
repository or its history — this repo starts at the extraction, deliberately,
rather than carrying a history that had spreadsheets in it.

`android/app/google-services.json` is a **placeholder**, committed so
`./gradlew :app:testFieldtestUnitTest` runs from a clean clone — all 98 tests,
no configuration. Sign-in needs your own Firebase project in its place.
