## The Story: "The Medieval Hypothesis"

> *"It's 3am, and I think: what if I woke up in a medieval time before computers existed? Can I trust myself to build the first ALU from the very bare level?"*

**A Motivational Thought Experiment:**
While I obviously used modern manufacturing (PCBs, produced MOSFETs, KiCad), this project was driven by the desire to minimize abstraction. I built this 8-bit ALU from **3,488 transistors** (18% discrete, 82% in 74HC logic) to prove I could understand the digital age from the ground up.

## Mission Statement

Design, simulate, and fabricate a complete 8-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit using discrete CMOS transistors to demonstrate fundamental computer architecture principles from first principles. This project bridges the gap between transistor physics and computational logic.

## What Makes This Different

Unlike typical ALU projects that use:

- Single monolithic IC (74181, black box)
- Relay logic (slow: ~10–100ms propagation)
- FPGA implementations (silicon black box)
- Breadboard prototypes (temporary, fragile)

**This hybrid project combines discrete transparency with IC efficiency:**

- **Hybrid design:** 624 discrete CMOS transistors (hand-soldered core logic) + 46 standard 74HC ICs (data routing)—3,488 transistors total
- **1,247,084 exhaustive test vectors** (100% coverage of all 19 operations)
- **Professional PCB design** (270×270mm, fabricated; assembly/verification in progress)
- **Transistor-level SPICE validation** (discrete gates verified in simulation)
- **100% open-source** (KiCad schematics, Gerbers, all test code)

**Why this approach?** Most educational ALUs hide logic in either black-box monolithic ICs or simple breadboards. This project demonstrates how discrete transistors form the foundation of logic, with standard ICs providing transparent, reusable building blocks for data routing.

## Problem Statement

**Challenge:** Modern ALUs are abstracted in silicon. How do you build computational logic from individual transistors?

**Solution:** Systematic bottom-up design:

1. CMOS transistor pairs → logic gates
2. Logic gates → 1-bit full adder
3. Full adders → 8-bit ripple-carry adder
4. Adder + logic arrays + control → complete ALU

**Result:** Educational platform demonstrating every layer of digital logic design.

### Formal Verification (SymbiYosys)

In addition to simulation, **Formal Verification** is used to mathematically prove the correctness of the ALU logic. Unlike test vectors which check specific cases, formal verification proves that properties hold true for **all possible inputs**.

## Key Design Decisions

### 1. XOR Array for Subtraction (40% Transistor Savings)

**Problem:** Implement A - B using existing adder

**Option A - XOR Array (Chosen):**

- Use: B' = B ⊕ M (where M = ADD/SUB control)
- Cost: 8 × 12T = 96T
- Elegant: Same M bit sets Cin for 2's complement

**Option B - MUX Array:**

- Use: 8-bit 2:1 MUX to select B or ~B
- Cost: 8 × 20T = 160T

**Decision:** XOR array saves 64T (40% reduction)

### 2. Global Inverter (89% Transistor Savings)

**Problem:** Implement AND, OR, XNOR from NAND, NOR, XOR

**Option A - Global Inverter (Chosen):**

- Single 8-bit inverter after MUX controlled by INV_OUT
- Cost: 8 × 2T = 16T
- Enables: NAND→AND, NOR→OR, XOR→XNOR, PASS A→NOT A

**Option B - Separate Gates:**

- Build AND, OR, XNOR separately
- Cost: 3 × (8 × 6T) = 144T

**Decision:** Global inverter saves 128T (89% reduction)

### 3. Ripple-Carry vs. Carry-Lookahead

**Chosen:** Ripple-carry (RCA) for the initial architectural iteration.

- **Reasoning:** As my first robust ALU design, I prioritized **mastery and debuggability**. I have deep familiarity with RCA dynamics, making it far easier to troubleshoot hardware bugs than a complex CLA.
- **Trade-off:** Slower propagation (O(n) ≈ 80ns) vs. Lower transistor count (336T).
- **Future Plan:** A modular Carry-Lookahead Adder (CLA) is planned to replace this block for performance optimization once the core system is fully stable.

### The Prototype: Learning from Failure

Before attempting the full ALU, I validated the entire "schematic-to-PCB" lifecycle with a single **Sample Inverter (NOT Gate)**. This pilot project was crucial for identifying a critical design flaw.

**Procurement & Fabrication Evidence:**

Validating the design required moving from simulation to physical components. This procurement phase served as the final gate before full-scale assembly.

**The "PMOS Assumption" Error:**

I initially assumed that for a PMOS transistor, the Drain and Source were interchangeable as long as $V_{GS}$ was negative.
- **My Assumption:** Current flows simply because the channel is open; orientation doesn't matter.
- **Reality:** In discrete MOSFETs, the **Source must be connected to $V_{DD}$** and the Drain to the output. Swapping them causes the body diode to conduct or the gate logic to fail, leading to component overheating ("blowing up") and circuit failure.

**The Fix:**

I manually resoldered and rewired the prototype to correct the polarity. This hands-on debugging session proved that theoretical assumptions must always be validated against real-world component physics.

### Design Trade-offs

**Performance:**

- Ripple-carry adder: O(n) propagation delay
- No pipelining: Single combinational path
- 80ns latency for 8-bit operations

**Functional:**

- Single-bit shifts only (no multi-bit or barrel shifter)
- No multiplication/division (addition/subtraction only)
- Limited to 8-bit word size

**Physical:**

- Large PCB: 270×270mm required for discrete transistors
- High component count: 3,488 transistors to solder
- Power consumption: ~2.5-5W (high for logic)

## Common Questions

**Q: Why discrete transistors instead of 74xx ICs?**
A: **Temporary Optimization for Simulation & Testing.** The current 74HC ICs (MUXes, XORs) are placeholders to stabilize the initial build and speed up verification. They allow me to isolate and verify the discrete adder core first. **The roadmap includes replacing every 74xx IC with its optimized discrete MOSFET equivalent** until the project is 100% fully discrete, as originally intended.

**Q: Why solo?** 
A: This was a vacation break project—a perfect opportunity to stress test my own capacity and learn independently. Building solo forced me to understand every detail, debug every issue, and own every decision. Plus, it's a great way to see what you're truly capable of when you push yourself.

**Q: Why ripple-carry instead of carry-lookahead adder?**
A: Simplicity and transistor count. Ripple-carry uses 336T vs. ~600T for carry-lookahead. For an 80ns target (adequate for educational purposes), ripple-carry is the right trade-off. Plus, you can literally *see* the carry propagate through stages on an oscilloscope. (Total project count: 3,488T via 74xx optimization).

**Q: Can I build this myself?**
A: Yes! All design files included:

- KiCad schematics and PCB layouts
- Gerber files ready for fabrication
- Complete [Bill of Materials (BOM)](docs/build-notes/bom.md) with vendor links
- Assembly instructions and test procedures
- **Time:** Est. 40-60 hours assembly

**Q: Does it actually work?**
A: **Simulation Verified; Hardware In Progress:**

-  Simulation: 100% (1.24M tests passing) of all 19 operations.
-  Hardware: Assembly and verification in progress (PCB optimization ongoing).
-  Performance: Characterization (timing, power) matches simulation models.

**Q: What's next after the ALU?**
A: **Phase 2:** Register file (8× 8-bit registers)

A: **Theoretical:**

- Arithmetic: ~80ns (8-bit ripple-carry propagation)
- Logic: ~80ns (single gate level + MUX)
- Max frequency: ~2.5 MHz (if inputs could toggle that fast)

**Actual:** Hardware characterization in progress. SPICE predicts 415ns for ADD, 85ns for AND.

**Q: Why 270×270mm PCB? That's huge!**
A: Discrete transistors need space. Each full adder = 42 transistors. 8 adders = 336T. Add logic arrays, MUXes, flags = 3,488T total (including IC equivalents). Standard 100×100mm PCB can't fit this density with hand-solderable components.

**Q: What did you learn from this project?**
A: Everything:

- Transistor physics (threshold voltages, switching times)
- Gate design (CMOS complementary pairs, fanout limits)
- Propagation delay (why modern CPUs need pipelining)
- Verification (why 1 test isn't enough—you need millions)
- PCB design (signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management)
- Debugging (oscilloscope skills, systematic troubleshooting)

**Q: Where did you work on this?**
A: Odd places! This project traveled with me—worked on it during train rides and from my dorm room. Sometimes the best projects happen when you're not in a traditional lab setting.

## Future Optimizations

The following architectural improvements are planned to enhance efficiency, standardization, and integration capabilities:

### 1. Independent Flags
- **Current State:** Flags like `LESS`, `GREATER`, and `EQUAL` are currently dependent on specific opcodes (e.g., subtraction or CMP).
- **Optimization:** Standardize flag logic to be **opcode-independent**.
- **Goal:** The ALU will always return valid status flags (`LESS`, `GREATER`, `EQUAL`, `POSITIVE`, `NEGATIVE`, `ZERO`, `CARRY_OUT`) regardless of the operation being performed, aligning with standard CPU architecture.

### 2. Input Inversion Logic (Hardware Optimization)
- **Current State:** Input inversion (`NOT A`, `NOT B`) uses dedicated 8-bit inverters controlled by 2:1 multiplexers.
- **Optimization:** Leverage the **main 8:1 Multiplexer** and the **Global Inverter**.
- **Implementation:** 
  - Instead of a dedicated path, `NOT A` will be implemented as `PASS A` + `Global Invert`.
  - `NOT B` will be implemented as `PASS B` + `Global Invert`.
- **Benefit:** Reduces transistor count significantly by removing redundant inverter arrays and MUXes.

### 3. Clock Integration
- **Current State:** The ALU is purely combinational (asynchronous).
- **Optimization:** Add **Clock Capacity** and latching output registers.
- **Goal:** Make the ALU fully synchronous and integrable into any standard CPU board or architecture that requires clocked execution stages.
