A Claude Code plugin that helps Australian workers organise their tax-related receipts and expenses for review by a registered tax agent.

## What It Does

- Scans your Gmail for receipts, invoices, and subscription confirmations from the financial year
- Categorises work-related expenses by ATO deduction category (D1–D15)
- If you have rental/investment properties, identifies property-related income and expenses — Division 40 plant & equipment, Division 43 capital works, borrowing costs, and cost base records for CGT
- Adds ATO guidance notes with source citations so your accountant has context
- Saves everything to a local folder — summary, CSV, receipt attachments, email references
- Prepares a draft email to your accountant with all documentation attached

The goal: you ask Claude to do your tax, answer a few questions, and walk away with a folder ready to send to your accountant.

## Extending the Plugin

Specialisation is organised along two community-extensible axes — a single return can draw on modules from both:

**Occupation guides** (`skills/au-tax-return/references/industries/`) — work-related deductions and email patterns for a job. Currently available:
- **IT / Tech Professionals** — software engineers, developers, IT managers, data scientists, DevOps, cybersecurity, AI/ML engineers

**Income-type modules** (`skills/au-tax-return/references/income-types/`) — additional income sources and their schedules. Currently available:
- **Rental / investment property** — income, deductible expenses, depreciation (Div 40/43), borrowing costs, CGT

Adding either is a drop-in file — no code or skill-description changes. See [Contributing](#contributing).

## Installation

### Claude Desktop / Cowork App

Then in the app: **Customize > Personal plugins > + > Upload plugin** and select the `au-tax-return.zip` file.

## Usage

Just ask Claude in natural language — the plugin's skills trigger automatically:

- **"Do my tax"** — prepares documentation for the most recent completed financial year
- **"Do my 2024-25 tax return"** — prepares documentation for a specific financial year
- **"Sort my downloaded receipts"** — files receipt attachments into the correct deduction folders

### Workflow

1. Ask Claude to "do my tax" — it asks about your job and work arrangement, connects to Gmail, and scans your emails for receipts and invoices
2. It creates a `tax-return-FY{YEAR}/` folder with a summary, CSV, and `email-references.md` containing clickable Gmail links for each receipt
3. Click the links to download your receipt attachments and save them to `tax-return-FY{YEAR}/receipts-to-sort/`
4. Ask Claude to "sort my receipts" — it reads each file, matches it to your deductions, corrects any misidentified items, and moves everything to the right category folder (e.g., `receipts/D5-work-related/` for work deductions, `rental/{property}/receipts/plant-equipment/` for rental items)

### Requirements

- Claude Code or Claude Cowork with the Gmail MCP connector available
- A Gmail account with your purchase receipts

### Without Gmail

If Gmail isn't available, the plugin works in manual mode — it walks you through each deduction category and you provide the details. It still creates the full output folder.

## Contributing

We welcome contributions, especially new modules along either axis:

**A new occupation guide** (e.g. nurses, tradies, teachers):
1. Copy `skills/au-tax-return/references/industries/_template.md`
2. Fill in the occupation-specific deductions, email search patterns, and common mistakes
3. Reference the relevant [ATO occupation guide](https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/income-deductions-offsets-and-records/guides-for-occupations-and-industries)

**A new income-type module** (e.g. sole trader/ABN, shares & CGT, crypto):
1. Copy `skills/au-tax-return/references/income-types/_template.md`
2. Fill in the income, deductible expenses, capital/CGT treatment, and email patterns
3. Cite the relevant ATO resource

Rental property tax treatment involves complex areas including depreciation, capital gains, and apportionment rules where errors are common — the ATO reports that the vast majority of rental property returns contain at least one error. Rental property outputs from this tool require professional review before use.
