OpenJDK 25.0.4 for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2, with automatic
Minecraft 26 compatibility. No One-Core-API or system-wide extended kernel is
required. The compatibility files stay inside the JDK installation.

## Supported configuration

- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2, with the correct hardware drivers.
- Minecraft 26.1 through 26.2: vanilla, Fabric, and NeoForge.
- Single-player and multiplayer for the supported main releases.
- MultiMC and the launcher-specific OLauncher entry point.
- Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 10: working vanilla single-player.

**Fabric and NeoForge support has been added for Minecraft 26.1–26.2.
Individual mods have not been tested.** A working mod loader does not mean
every mod or native dependency is compatible with Windows XP.

**Minecraft 26.3 mod loaders are not supported yet.** Snapshot 10 works in
single-player. Multiplayer is expected to work, but has not been verified:
no compatible public server was available for testing. Please report results
or problems through [GitHub Issues](https://github.com/Somehowfreename/openjdk-25-windows-xp-x64/issues).

loader versions. Only the configurations listed there are covered by this
release.

## Before installing

1. Install Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2 and the correct chipset,
   network, audio, and 64-bit graphics drivers for your computer.
2. Set the correct date, time, and time zone. An incorrect clock can prevent
   HTTPS downloads and Microsoft sign-in.
3. Download `XP-x64-Certificates-Installer.zip` from
   [Releases](https://github.com/Somehowfreename/openjdk-25-windows-xp-x64/releases/latest).
   Extract the ZIP completely, open the enclosed
   `XP-x64-Certificates-Installer` folder, and double-click
   `Install Certificates.bat` while logged on as an administrator. Keep the
   BAT, `import-sst-xp-x64.exe`, and `WURoots.sst` in the same folder. Wait for
   **SUCCESS**, then restart XP.
4. Install the OpenJDK installer from the same release as an administrator.

Legacy Update is **not required**. The original XP release was successfully
tested from a fresh installation using unmodified official XP x64 SP2 media,
without post-SP2 Windows updates, after installing the hardware drivers and
current root certificates. Installing applicable Windows updates is still
recommended for general security; XP remains an unsupported operating system.

The installer does not replace Windows system DLLs or change global `PATH`
or `JAVA_HOME`. The default installation folder is:

`C:\Program Files\Legacy OpenJDK\jdk-25.0.4-xp-x64`

Close Minecraft and the launchers before upgrading. Back up any files you have
added to or modified inside the JDK directory. Read the installer's upgrade
warning and file report before confirming replacement.

## Configure MultiMC

1. Download the official Windows archive from [multimc.org](https://multimc.org/#Download).
2. Extract the entire archive to a local folder, for example `C:\Games\MultiMC`.
   Do not run it from inside the ZIP or from a network/shared folder.
3. Start `MultiMC.exe` and sign in through **Manage Accounts > Add Microsoft**.
   You can complete the device-code web page on a modern computer or phone.
4. In **Settings > Java**, select this executable:

`C:\Program Files\Legacy OpenJDK\jdk-25.0.4-xp-x64\bin\minecraft-javaw-multimc.exe`

MultiMC's **first-launch** Java picker may hide this name. In that initial
   dialog, enter the full path manually, or cancel the dialog and use
   **Settings > Java > Browse** after the main window opens. That picker shows
   the executable normally.
5. Click **Add Instance** and choose the desired supported Minecraft 26 release.
6. Make sure any instance-specific Java override uses the same executable.
7. Use a maximum memory setting of `4096 MiB` if your computer has enough RAM.
   No additional compatibility JVM flags are required.
8. Launch the instance normally.

Existing MultiMC users can keep selecting `bin\minecraft-javaw.exe`: it is a
physical, byte-identical copy of `minecraft-javaw-multimc.exe`.

### Fabric or NeoForge

For Minecraft 26.1–26.2, open **Edit Instance > Version** and install either
Fabric or NeoForge for that exact Minecraft version. Use one loader per
instance. The same Java executable handles vanilla and these loaders; no
manual DLL replacement is needed. The tested loader versions are listed in
the [configuration matrix](LEGACY_WINDOWS_TEST_MATRIX.md).

Individual mods have not been tested. In particular, mods that bundle native
libraries may require Windows APIs or graphics features that XP does not have.

## OLauncher

Use [OLauncher](https://github.com/olauncher/olauncher) from its official
project. Sign in using its normal Microsoft-account flow. Select this Java
executable in the profile settings:

`C:\Program Files\Legacy OpenJDK\jdk-25.0.4-xp-x64\bin\minecraft-javaw-olauncher.exe`

The OLauncher executable is specific to that launcher; do not substitute the
MultiMC executable. Loader profiles must be installed for the matching game
version using the loader's supported installation procedure. This JDK does not
add loader-management buttons to OLauncher.

If OLauncher downloads stall, use a build containing its resumable-download
and completed-file validation fix. Launcher downloads and account sign-in are
separate from the JDK's game compatibility.

## How the compatibility works

Select the appropriate launcher executable and launch normally. It selects
the bundled compatible native libraries before the game loads them. It does
not require patching the launcher or manually changing its downloaded JARs.
The XP audio configuration is applied automatically inside the Minecraft
process; users do not need to create an `alsoft.ini` file.

Do not select the software-rendering executables in `bin\vmtests` for normal
hardware use. They are intended for environments without suitable hardware
OpenGL support and are substantially slower.

## Install certificates manually

You do not have to use the certificate installer or trust its bundled root
store. To obtain the certificates directly from Microsoft:

1. On a supported, Internet-connected Windows computer, open an administrator
   Command Prompt in a new empty folder and run:

```cmd
   certutil -generateSSTFromWU WURoots.sst
   certutil -hashfile WURoots.sst SHA256
   ```

2. To use your own Microsoft-generated store with the automated importer,
   replace the ZIP's `WURoots.sst` with your new file, keeping it next to the
   BAT and importer. Run the BAT as an administrator on XP.
3. To use **no executable from this project**, open the generated SST on the
   supported computer, review the roots, and export the required certificates
   as DER-encoded `.cer` files. Copy them to XP.
4. On XP, run `mmc` as an administrator. Add the **Certificates** snap-in for
   **Computer account > Local computer**. Open **Trusted Root Certification
   Authorities > Certificates**, then use **Action > All Tasks > Import** to
   import the reviewed certificates.
5. Restart XP after completing the import.

Microsoft documents [generating an SST with certutil](https://learn.microsoft.com/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/certutil)
and [the local-machine trusted-root certificate store](https://learn.microsoft.com/windows-hardware/drivers/install/trusted-root-certification-authorities-certificate-store).
Adding a root changes trust for the entire computer. Do not import bundles
from untrusted mirrors. The importer's source is under
`legacy-windows/tools/xp-cert-import`.

Minecraft, launcher accounts, tokens and game assets are not bundled. Own the
game and sign in through your launcher normally. Never include account files
or access tokens in a public bug report.
