**Drop a game. Play instantly.**

Most emulators want something from you before they'll run anything: an install, an account, a folder of config files. Opal Emu wants the game.

Drop a ROM onto [opalemu.com](https://opalemu.com) and it starts. It works out which console the file belongs to, keeps every byte on your device, and remembers where you left off. No upload, no server, no sign-in.

Bring your own games; none are included or distributed here.

## Use it

## What you get

**Save states.** Save anywhere, resume anywhere. Export one to a file and carry it to another browser or machine.

**Rewind and fast-forward.** Undo the bad jump, skip the grind.

**Display filters.** Sharp pixels, a plain smooth resize, an edge-aware pixel-art upscaler for that clean-but-not-blurry look, or a real CRT shader with scanlines.

**Controllers.** Most pads work the moment you plug them in. Anything unusual can be remapped, keyboard included.

**On phones and tablets.** Full on-screen controls, laid out for the console you're playing - a d-pad, the right face buttons, shoulders, and an analog stick for the systems that have one.

**Cheat codes.** If that's how you play.

**Offline.** Install it like an app. After the first load it runs on a plane.

Plus screenshots, dark and light themes, and no console picker to click through.

## Open a game by link

Append `?rom=` and a direct URL to a game file to have it load on arrival:

The URL must be `https://` (plain `http://` is rejected, apart from `localhost` while developing), and the file has to be served with CORS headers that allow the fetch - otherwise the browser blocks it before Opal Emu ever sees the bytes. Everything else is unchanged: the file is fetched straight into your browser and identified exactly as a dropped one would be.

> **Disc games** are often split across a `.cue` file and one or more `.bin` tracks. Drop the whole set in together and Opal Emu bundles them for you.

> **Zipped and 7z'd games** work as-is - drop the `.zip` or `.7z` straight in, no need to extract it first. This covers any system above, including a `.cue` + `.bin` set already archived together.

> **Some disc formats don't say which console they're for.** A bare `.bin` or `.chd` carries no marker Opal Emu can read, so it asks once and remembers. `.iso` files usually identify themselves and go straight through.

Threaded cores need `SharedArrayBuffer`, which only exists on a cross-origin-isolated page. The dev server sets the `COOP`/`COEP` headers in `vite.config.ts`, production sets the same pair in `vercel.json`, and the Docker image sets them in `nginx.conf` - already handled if you're using one of these. Host it some other way and you'll need to set them there too.

## Self-hosting

Opal Emu is a static app with nothing to sign up for, which also makes it easy to run on your own hardware:
